Opinions on these training collars?
-Prong collar
-Choke chain/nylon slip collar
-Head collar(gentle leader, halti)
-Anti-pull harness
-Shock collar
For my dogs, I use a prong on my APBT mix, a nylon slip collar for my springer/lab(regular choke chains pull out her fur) and a regular buckle collar for my 4 month old pup.
We have a gentle leader for my springer/lab(recommended by the shelter for use during training and when we are there because my mom and I volunteer. They don’t allow chain or choke collars)
I used to hate head collars.. but I have to admit, they don’t seem that bad to me anymore(I know many people won’t like that comment lol)
Anyways.. should it matter what type of training collar someone uses for their dog? Shouldn’t it matter what works best for the dog(be it a prong or a head collar?)
Thanks!
I’ve used all of the above — honestly, it completely depends on the dog!
Good trainers don’t use only one method. They have lots of different ways and methods to train.
I’ve used prongs only occasionally, and actually the research indicates these are safer than slip chains! prongs look horrible but put one on your own arm and give a good snap — no biggie and I don’t have fur!
Shock collars — yes, occasionally for the dog who breaks the out of sight stay and there are few other ways to correct this. Also for field training. Remember, a shock collar has a vibration and tone element too.
I personally use mostly slip chains, as the noise of the slip is the cue to stop pulling, etc.
Anything training collar, ****USED PROPERLY**** is fine.
“Safe collars” (flat) when used improperly can kill (yes kill — ever see a dog slip one and get hit by a car — I have! Ever seen a dog struggle and pull against a flat collar – out of control — and cause the owner to be injured — I have!)
