Is it necessary to give my dogs heartgard in cold winter months?
I usually give them heartgard every month but i live in nj and i stop giving it to them in December but i will start back up again in march. Snow has been on the ground since December and in the winter my dogs do not stay outside long, they do their business and come right back in. In the summer they are always outside so i make sure i give it to them then. And plus heartgard is very expense especially for two dogs and i also have to pay for yearly pet visits and flea medication and on top of regular pet supplies ( I think i spend more on my pets than myself).
Do you give it to your pets year round?
Your right, there is no need to give heart worm preventative in the cold months as heart worms come from infected mosquitoes which can not live after a freeze.
I stop giving heartworm preventatives at the first freeze and start up again after the thaw and threat of mosquitoes.
