When did the style of dog training classes change?
Serious question here. When I was a kid and training you took your dog one night a week for eight weeks and it was a formal class focusing on the companion dog curriculum. One person per dog marched around and taught the dog. I enrolled in a class with my latest dog last year and everything had changed! Whole families wandered around in a circle with their pet on a loose leash and not in heel position. What style of training is that? It wasn’t the one I remembered. I can’t say I got much out of the last class and the dogs didn’t learn much either. Can anyone explain please?
Not sure when it changed as I’m only on my first dog but it is my understanding that everyone in the household is encouraged to take part in training the dog. (Easy for me being single!) Everyone “participates” so everyone knows the commands, how to reinforce the training, etc. I put participates in quotes because I’ve seen a few classes where the kids are much more interested in playing with the dog than paying attention to the trainer…to the detriment of other attendees.
As for loose leash walking vs. heel – for the average companion dog owner, there’s really no need to teach a strict “heel” (ie dog’s nose glued to human’s foot), unless you plan on entering the show ring, as long as they have good leash behavior.
