Dog Training Mouthing

dog-training Dog Training Mouthing
How should i teach my dog to stop mouthing(biting) and junping on people?

- i have a german shepard, she’s 1 years old, and her name is roxy. i adopted her like 2 weeks ago.

- she is perfect! she is potty train, and crate train. but she won’t stop jumping on people (like when yu walk in through the door) and she will not stop biting people (she will even bite me, and i was watching a training video and they said it was called mouthing. she is going through a teething phase, but she will not stop and it is getting out of hand!!!)

- When she does bite, i will say no and put her in the crate (& sometimes i will even hit her on the face, but gently). But she will still bite!!!!! (& i will do the same thing when she jumps on people).

1. So how can i stop her?
2. When will the teething phase stop?
3. I’m i doing the right thing or should i do it in a different way?
4. She is ALWAYS hyper when i let her out of the crate, is it because she is a puppy?
o yeah, someone said i should say “Ow” when she bites, and i do. but she is still doing it!!!!

At one-year old your dog is not “teething” anymore and her behavior isn’t a phase. Her mouthing and jumping up on people is “dominance” behavior. Mouthing is done by dogs who don’t accept you (or other people) as their “apha”. Mother dogs, for example, mouth their pups to control them, and when your dog mouths you, he’s showing you that he thinks you’re lower on the totem pole than he is.

Jumping up is also a dominance behavior. Your head is the highest point on your body, and dominant dogs jump up to try to (1) knock you down so your head is lower than theirs and (2) get their head as high as yours. You’ll a somewhat similar behavior when dominant dogs meet other dogs, and lift their head high and try to put it over the back of the other dog. This “posturing” is the dog’s way of say, “get down or I’ll take you down.”

The only thing that will stop this behavior is a concerted effort by you to establish and maintain your position in your household as the ‘top dog”. Seeking out a trainer skilled with dealing with dominant dogs will help you correct this problem quickly.
