How can I train my dog? Please help!?
We adopted an adult chihuahua from the shelter. At first when we got him he seemed like a very quiet well-behaved dog but then he started showing signs of aggression. Like if we try to touch him and he doesn’t want to be touched he will growl and sometimes even bite us. Also he is very protective of his food, blanket, and people, and gets defensive if anyone goes near it. And whenever we have guests over he gets nervous and starts acting up. Otherwise he is a very sweet and lovable dog and I have no idea why he acts like that. I love my dog and I want to help him, because if he doesn’t change his behavior we may have to return him to the shelter. Do you have any tips on how we can train him?
P.S. We have tried punishing him by putting him on time-out, but it hasn’t seemed to work.
There’s a slight problem with training dogs. That is, if you get them when they’re not a puppy anymore. The saying ”You cant teach an old dog new tricks” is pretty accurate im afraid, meaning once it becomes an adult, its learning ability becomes very hard to crack. Its nothing to do with the dog as such, its down to the way it was brought up before you got him. The best way to teach him now is not with punishment but with rewards. For example, everything he does as he’s told to do, he should be rewarded with something small. Sooner or later he’ll realize that hes only getting treated because of his good behavior.
