Understanding Labrador Retrievers – Does Your Dog Have an Oral Obsession?

Labrador Retriever dogs were raised to be great hunting dogs with the power, stamina, and motivation to chase down fallen game and swim as far needed to bring back the prey to its hunter.

These dogs have a natural drive to retrieve. With the highest focus and determination, Labs are serious about their retrieving jobs. Even though most of these dogs are in door pets and do not hunt, they are just as driven when chasing a ball or running after a stick.

Labradors were made and developed to use the power of their jaws just like a stern hand. During almost every waking moment they feel the need to place something in their mouths, and without the presence of an animal, they will grab a hold of anything they possible can. This is extraordinary for people who love playing fetch with their dog but it’s not so good for those dog owners that hate when their dogs are always placing items in its mouth.

Labs Have An Oral obsession

Several families run out and buy a puppy without doing an ounce of research as to what type of dog they are getting involved in and how it will act based on its genetics. Trust me, I know. A relative of mine went out and got a Labrador Retriever simply because her neighbor had one. She didn’t realize that this type of dog needs extra special care. She had her hands full with caring for her new dog. Labrador Retrievers are know to have an oral obsession because due to hundreds of years of breeding specifically for grabbing fallen birds into their mouths when hunting. This behavior most definitely carries over into their every day lives.

An educated Lab owner recognizes that any object within their dog’s reach is considered fair game and they would never dream of yelling at the dog for such behavior. Uneducated Lab owners consider this behavior useless and will yell or even hit the animal in an attempt to get the dog to stop putting stuff in its mouth.

There is a very fine line between letting your Lab express its inner retrieving needs, and allowing it to destroy anything within the house it can nibble on. This is where specific training and obedience lessons come into play. These dogs are born to chew so you must take provisions for their tendency to chew by using a crate and dog proofing your home.

Regular supervision and developing daily playtime sessions with your Lab is a necessity for both you and your dog to be healthy. Unfortunately, many people bite off way more than they are able to chew when getting a Labrador Retriever. Many dog owners fail to realize that labs need a lot of love and care. If you decide to not to participate in the proper upbringing and training that a Lab requires, you will become very frustrated and unhappy while your dog becomes bored and violent. So, before getting that cuddly Labrador Retriever, you need to consider whether or not you are capable of handling all that it takes to care for one.

– Stuart Wolman switched from pets to people when he was recently hired as Vice President of Sales and Services for hair care manufacturer Peter Hantz Company, 1840 E. University in Tempe, AZ.

Before joining Peter Hantz Company, which also owns and operates 19 cosmetology schools in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Florida, Wolman served as Director of Pet Services of Petco in San Diego.

His background includes 13 years of experience in corporate finance, budgeting, forecasting and marketing for the Pet Services division of Petco, as well as the hands-on experience he gained from owning Pet Supply Warehouse in San Diego (which he sold to Petco in 1997).

Wolman’s success includes increasing grooming sales and profits 700% in eight years for Petco, where he still works as a consultant.  He also received the small business award by the Small Business Association when he owned and operated Pet Supply Warehouse.

The Philadelphia native graduated from Temple University with a BS in Business before moving to California, followed by his recent move to Arizona.

I “never wanted children” so when I got pregnant I kept playing softball and sliding into the bases hoping to miscarry. I didn’t drink or do drugs so being very active was all I could think to do.

 For anyone who has a yorkshire terrier this is good news.  I love them, they are cheeky, cheerful, lovely and loveable.  When you love your pet you want to please them and  make them happy. .You will get original, beautiful yorkie clothes for dogs, hand made by me at cheap prices.  This range has been described by a leading newspaper as “designer dog clothes fit for the catwalk, striking designs and colours”. Yorkie clothes are ideal for lots of different dogs. Corgis, scotties, westies, chihuahas. They fit lap dogs, cuddly dogs, tiny dogs, many breeds of dogs. They are especially good for Chinese cresteds, chihuahas and other short haired and hairless dogs.

Most sites sell designer dog clothing that is very expensive AND mass produced. Here you get a lot more choice, it is individual to your choice, and cheaper too.   Anyone who wants or needs to buy clothes for dogs will be amazed at how cheap these designer dogs’ coats are. Why are they cheap? Well for one thing I am officially retired. Not interested in returning to working very long hours with offices and lots of staff, which also means I have a lot less expensive. For another I am not obsessed with money.

They are , honest.  That is not my biased opinion.  A week or so after the launch of this great site a leading newspaper looked at the site and said “designer dogs’ clothes fit for the catwalk” and could not praise them enough.   Clothes for dogs can be beautiful AND well made AND original and CHEAP too.

I used to have a friend who had a tiny yorkie doggy called Shrimp. He was called that because he was so tiny. His little dog used to feel the cold a lot.  He would have loved these yorkie clothes.  Whether you are buying them because you like the looks of them and want arm candy or to stop the dog feeling the cold – or both – you now have an enormous, lovely range to choose from.  I think this really is the best clothes for dogs site online.

Puppy Dog Training – Made Simple

ABC’s of Dog Training, answering some important questions you may have about owning and raising your puppy.  “How do you make your dog sit when you tell him to and I can’t get mine to do so?”  Sound familiar?  If so, then it’s high time that you immerse yourself in undertaking a little bit of basic dog training.  Here is a good tip to start…when your puppy happens to come to you, take this opportunity to say the command “come,” as he is walking to you. When he gets to you, tell your puppy, “good boy, good come” in a higher tone of voice. This will help your dog know when he is behaving appropriately and give him him confidence to take on more training.

In some ways, young puppies are like young children… training goes a lot easier if you start early and are consistent. Keeping an eye on your dog is very important in the first few weeks after bringing them home. That is where you will get the most progress in your training.  When your dog does something you don’t like,  it is imperative that you let him know during the act, immediately.  Say for example, he lifts his leg on the houseplant, if you have been watching him before he did it you will be able to stop him with a clap or a “sssst” sound.  If you are close enough you can nip him in the rear or side with your hand. Use your hand like a dog would use their mouth.  Say, “no” in a deeper tone of voice.  Right away, show them what you want them to do, where to go, what to chew, ect.

Teaching your puppy crate training is the first and best step in his life. Dog training is simple with crate training as it makes all the other steps in his training go so much smoother. Take them outside to where the designated potty area is and give the command, “potty”, or whatever word you choose to use for that command.  If your puppy goes potty right then, praise him with your voice while he is going potty. When he is done, pet him and praise him again.  If he doesn’t go right away, make sure your dog is comfortable, wait two minutes or so.  If he still doesn’t go, put him back in his crate and wait 10 to 30 minutes or so and repeat the process again.  Do this for a day or two and your puppy dog will be potty trained! Keep it up!  If you get your puppy from a breeder, ask them if they have already started the process of crate training the puppies before they come home with you. This is a great way to instill positive training for a lifetime from the beginning. If you are a breeder and do this with your litters, great job! If you are thinking of breeding, this method will make your life and the new owners of the puppies life so much better from the start.

If your Dog or Puppy is driving you crazy with it’s excessive barking, whining or chewing, or if your dog is too aggressive and bites or growls at your visitors, you need an immediate remedy.  Make a checklist to go through to stop annoying behavior. Ask yourself, does my puppy need food or water?  Does he need exercise?  Does he want to play?  It’s a good idea to have a dog run available in your yard to let him release excess energy if you don’t have time to take him for a walk.  Is there something causing your dog pain?   Groom your dog or have him professionally groomed to find out. Sometimes groomers will find skin problems and areas that are susceptible to tangles, burrs, or rashes.  If he is barking at your visitors, ask yourself, does he feel safe?  Am I the one in charge of the house or does he feel like it’s his job now?  Make sure you are the “alpha dog.”  His dog crate will keep him feeling safe, close to you inside the house, and away from your visitors.  Always make sure he has a good bone or toy to chew available in his crate to curb boredom.

Training your dog is the basic and fundamental steps to communicating and teaching your dog proper obedience and good behavior.  Your friends will feel welcome in your home and appreciate your dog being there instead of being annoyed by your dog. Take your puppy with you to visit friends and family, they will be impressed with you! Once you are communicating with your dog and she understands what is acceptable doggy behavior she will be happy to please you and anyone else who wants to communicate with her as well.
